I bought two DVDs today, The Fantastic Four (yeah, that was a mistake) and Batman Begins.
I pop in the main DVD of Batman Begins, and so am presented with a menu listing several countries, starting with Australia. I skip through to the third or fourth page, find Ireland, and select it.
One of those terrible anti-piracy ads stars to play. I’m forced to sit through it as I’m told, through terrible analogy, piracy is bad don't pirate lol. Finally, an Irish copyright protection agency’s number pops onto the screen.
I’m a wee bit annoyed at being forced to take an action to choose the most effective way of being talked down to, but I do think these ads are counter-productive. The electronic music, the fast cuts, the fact that the guy who steals the handbag seems to be wearing a suit; associating these things with piracy only makes me think piracy is cool.
It’s like the conservative attempt at humour... dull, derivative and dumb. More on conservatives in tomorrow.
this is why i still buy VHS ( mostly from Chapters )
i never found anything special about DVD's
all they do is include a shit load of extras which show you how the film was made, inevitably ruining the fantasy that is movie making.
as for the pirate adds, i was bit shocked.
I bought "Toy Soldiers" on VHS from chapters
last week. so i let it play the hole way through, to watch the ads for movies that were only being released back then.
then i came across and old "against piracy ad" that to this day still confuses and scares me!
its the one where the little girl is watching her video, she is all happy. her mother is outside gardening, then some weird images of static flash on the screen and the girl starts to look scared, and then it cuts to a delicious montage scene were the girl just stares at her mother.
now it never had effect on me, but it just scared me because my younger imagination ran wild, but we never did get to see what the girl saw...

It's also somewhat ironic that the only way to actually enjoy the content of most DVDs without having to sit through a pile of crap (anti-piracy ads, production company splash screens, sometimes ads) is to have a pirate copy.
